You Asked: Hair Hair Hair!

Because pregnancy hair is the BEST hair. Photo by Linnea Paulina

Ya’ll really know how to make a girl feel good about her hair! When I reached out on Instagram for any blog topic ideas, the number one request was details on my hair. I aim to please, so here’s everything there is to know about my mane 😉

For starters, I’ve always had really thick hair. It’s naturally wavy (not cute wavy, more frizzy than anything). I haven’t colored my hair in over five years, which I think is one of the reasons it is so healthy. I also think it’s super important to get your hair cut by someone experienced who knows how to maximize what you’re working with as well as compliment your face shape and skin tone when cutting and coloring. I’ve been getting my hair done by the same person for over TEN YEARS. If you’re in Portland and are looking for an amazing hair stylist, Chachi is your guy. Love him!

I don’t use a ton of product for my hair — I have a few I love and have used for years. For shampoo and conditioner, I use either Redken or Pureology. I am less committed to a certain shampoo, I usually buy a big bottle of something at Ulta or at my hair salon and use that for months. Right now I’m using Pureology Smooth Perfection Shampoo, before that I was using Redken All Soft Shampoo. I really liked both!

I am, however, very committed to my conditioner, which is really great for thick, wavy hair like mine: Pureology Precious Oil Conditioner. A little goes a LONG way, even their standard size bottle lasts me 6+ months. It is amazing for taming my mane and it also smells incredible.

Other than shampoo + conditioner, the only other hair product I use is Moroccan Oil. I have the pump bottle and use two pumps on my wet hair, then blow-dry. If you don’t have very thick hair you could definitely get away with just using one pump and the bottle will last a super long time.

In terms of blowdrying and styling here’s what I do 1-2x/week:

+Wash hair
+Brush with a large paddle brush
+Apply two pumps of Moroccan Oil mostly to ends and then throughout the rest
+Brush again with a large paddle brush
+Let air dry for 20-30 minutes (for me it’s important it isn’t longer than this or it actually changes the texture of my hair and makes it more oily somehow?!)
+Blowdry while using large paddle brush
+Curl in sections (about 4-5) using a 1.5″ curling iron, alternating each chunk of hair within the section to curl outward and inward (this is really difficult to explain without actually showing you — maybe I’ll try to do an Instagram story or something?!)
+Make sure to always curl pieces that frame my face outward (this has a more slimming effect on your face, or so I’m told)
+Run through hair with fingers, loosening up the curls
+Set with a medium hold hairspray – I use Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray Medium
+To refresh hair during the week, curl a few pieces of hair around your face and use dry shampoo as-needed

That’s it! I don’t re-curl my entire head of hair every day. That would take an insane amount of time that I don’t have. I am sure my ability to only wash and style my hair once or twice a week and have it stay relatively nice looking has a lot to do with the amount of hair I have as well as its natural texture.

Let me know if you have any questions that weren’t answered — I’m an open book!
