My Camera & Lens

I’ve had quite a few questions recently about what camera I use, so thought I’d answer everyone with one post. I use a Canon Rebel T1i with 50mm 1.4 lens. I’m no expert, but these two work amazingly for me and I love them! I barely ever use the stock lens that came with the camera (18-55mm) as I am quite addicted to the amazing quality my 50mm gets me. The 50mm 1.8 is a cheaper alternative that I’ve heard is also great for beginners.  Leave a comment below if you have any other questions. And don’t forget I also have a Formspring account if you want to ask me something over there!

  1. I've been trying to convince my fiance that we need a good camera for our upcoming Hawaii trip. You take amazing pics with this camera I'll have to show him to help sway him in my favor!!

  2. I am dying for a new lens. I use an 80 mm fixed and it is annoying because it is so zoomed in. I think you have convinced me to go for the 50mm.

  3. Thanks for sharing. Do you carry your Canon with you at all times?

The reason I ask is because I'm torn between getting the Canon Rebel T2i or one of the new smaller mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.

I like to take pictures while hiking, camping, etc. My fiance thinks a DSLR would be too bulky to carry around and, therefore, I won't use it as often as a MILC or a point-and-shoot.

Is the Rebel OK in situations like that?

  4. Jonalynn,

I'd be lying if I said a DSLR was totally convenient… It can be kind of annoying to cart around… But I sacrifice for the quality of the photos.

Amanda! HAHAHA You know how much I work out 🙂 Not enough! Let's go to the gym this week!

  5. I've been dying to get a new lens for my camera and you may have inspired me to go for it. I just checked and yup I have been using my Canon 18-55 mm. Time for an ungrade maybe?! 🙂

  6. Ok question Liz, I have a 50 mm f/1.8 as well that I used to use for close ups of my food shots but now I don't ever really use. Is that what you have too? It's a fixed lens which drives me a little crazy. Is the one you are taking about fixed?!

  7. Hi Liz! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to the Slate article you posted about Dutch women working. It was very, very interesting and made me wonder about some things we experienced when living there. The majority of women I knew there were actually in very senior management roles, so it was kind of shocking to read about the number of women working only part-time. However, now that I think about it, there were a lot of women that I would see daily at the market or around Amsterdam, and I would often wonder “what jobs do these women have that let them have days off like this????” So I guess it makes sense in retrospect. I have heard from friends though, that Dutch women are exceptionally creative and attentive mothers, and always throw the best birthday parties or bake the best goodies for school, etc. Also, the whole idea of a healthy work-life balance, and the notion of living life with the goal of enjoying it, are very prevalent in everyday Dutch life.

Thanks for sending that article over, I really enjoyed reading it.

  8. Thanks for sharing what lens you use for your camera, as your photos are great!

I have a Canon Rebel with the stock lens. It's been working fine for me, but I was wondering… What do you love about the 50mm 1.4 lens that you use? I've been kinda looking into getting a new lens & I just wanted to see what people love about the more advanced lenses they are using!

  9. Thanks for the tip! I got the same camera for Christmas and now I'm ready to take the next step with a new lens. But since I'm new to the DSLR thing I haven't known which one to choose.

  10. I love these posts! I did a “what's in my camera bag” earlier this week. I have the T1i, as well, and love it. I'm hoping to upgrade at some point, but no complaints right now. 🙂
